What socialist governments are you referring to Steve?
The 1945-51 British Labour governments? Kadar's Hungary in the 70s and 80s? Krieisky's Austrian govt in the 70s or Olof Palme's Swedish government in the 70s and 80s? They all used death squads did they?
If you're looking for other examples of neo-con supported governments which used death squads, why not try El Salvador, or Chile under Pinochet?

'After all, one state-backed killing is pretty much like another as far as most people are concerned, at least in terms of the underlying morality'.
Is it really?
I think most people can tell the moral difference between execution after an open and fair trial by a judge and jury- and summary execution by government death squads.
Ever heard of due process old boy?

I am not a pacifist and have never said the state doesn't have a right to kill people. But there is a major difference between the execution of convicted murderers- (like Ian Huntley) and Class A drug dealers and launching illegal aggressive wars against other sovereign states- knowing that innocent people will inevitably get killed. Aren't the real hypocrites here those like the British Prime Minsiter - who opposes the death penalty-(where convicted murderers are executed after an open and fair trial)- but who supported the virtual summary execution of Saddam Hussein's sons? Had the sons been captured and found guilty of murder and other capital crimes, Blair would presumably have argued against executing them.Yet he was quite happy to see them bombed to kingdom come.
Where's the logic in that? I'm going to be posting on illogical opposition to capital punishment very shortly. Pacifists who oppose it aren't hypocrites- but those who support war and oppose it most definitely are.
