As John Casey points out- a generation or so ago blasphemy laws would probably been used against Jerry Springer, the Opera. But does this mean we are moving forward as a society? I have my doubts.
I saw the Danish cartoons for the first time today- and felt sorry (a) for those people whose lives are so sad that they felt they had to draw them and (b) for those people whose lives are so sad that having seen them they then decided to burn the nearest Danish embassy.
