Serbia votes 'the wrong way'

Those silly old Serbs. Don't they understand that 'democracy' doesn't mean voting for any party you like, but only for parties the west approves of?
Here's my piece from today's First Post on the very undemocratic reaction of the self-appointed apostles of democracy to the Serb poll.

I don't think you are being very fair. There are plenty of advocates of spreading democracy who respect the democratic decisions people make.

At the end of the day, one has to make up their mind which of three sperate reasons one can use to legitimise the concept of sovereignty.

1) Consent of the people.
2) Basic human rights.
3) The importance of borders, history and heritage.

Personally I like 2/3rds of number on and another chunk of number two.

I don't see why that means I have to enjoy bombing people either, in all fairness.

I agree with you (and with your latest Guardian piece, Thursday 25/1), the two-faced arrogance of some western powers is sometimes breathtaking. I'm married to an ex-pat Croat and have seen at first hand some of what Serb nationalism ended up doing to the Croats, the Bosnians, and finally themselves. It wasn't pretty, and it WAS stupid - and they'd be just as stupid to inflict further agony on themselves. But if that's what they voted for, so be it. Who are we to stop them? The most we should be able to do is prevent them inflicting the same agony on any population other than the one that voted for it.
