Pete Postlethwaite R.I.P.

(video: wg05a)

How sad to hear yesterday the news of the death of that great actor Pete Postlethwaite.

My favourite role of Pete's was his portrayal of the passionate brass band conductor Danny in the 1996 film 'Brassed Off'. Above you can hear Danny's wonderful speech at the end of the film- one of the most powerful attacks on the inhumanity of Thatcherism and neoliberalism you'll ever hear.

The only Pete Postlethwaite film I've seen is Inception, where he played a dying man (alas, not much of a stretch at the time).

There was quite a bit of mention of his death in the American media, with Steven Spielberg calling him the best actor in the world.

The First Post reports,

"John Prescott, the former deputy prime minister, has credited Brassed Off for inspiring Labour's regeneration programme for mining communities".

Hmmmm
