The Festival of Remembrance: It's time to save it from the warmongers

My latest piece for RT.com OpEdge.

The Great Silence.” That’s how the London Times newspaper (back then Britain’s newspaper of record and not a crude neo-con propaganda sheet), described Britain’s first Armistice/Remembrance Day, which took place on November 11, 1919.
“Everywhere there was mourning, sorrow, and thanksgiving… For some minutes before the maroons ushered in the period of prayer, a strange self-consciousness had fallen upon the people,” The Times reported.
The feelings were easy to understand. During WW1, over 700,000 British soldiers and servicemen were killed in a conflict that claimed the lives of around 17 million people worldwide. No wonder the talk was of a “Lost Generation.”

You can read the whole piece here.

Yes agreed!! What's happened to remembrance Sunday all of a sudden? It seems to of escalated into a circus for some reason.. Once over it was self sustainable you didn't need to be force fed especially the furore because a football team had the "audacity " not to sport a poppy on the shirt! It was once a solemn and dignified remembrance where when I was at school we got a lesson in the harsh reality of war and especially the great war and it really meant that"so many owed so much to the few" it's disappointing that the military industrial complex are involved in it and that clearly shows a conflict of interests... Read your other articles as well...a brilliant piece in the morning star and I particularly enjoyed the "goulash and solidarity " excerpt hidden in there! Murdoch clearly has his work cut out diverting my attention

Absolutely. It's become a circus. Those of who can remember the 70s know it wasn't always like this. It's very sad what's happened. The CorbynBow Sun furore was just beyond pathetic, wasn't it? From a paper that's propagandised for illegal wars. I'm pleased you liked the Star piece too.
