Serena Williams: A disgrace to tennis

Earlier this summer I remarked on the unsporting behaviour of Serena Williams after she had won the womens' title at Wimbledon. But if Williams is arrogant in victory, when facing defeat she is totally obnoxious, as she showed in the semi-final of the US Open last night. I can't remember more appalling behaviour on a tennis court, and Williams' post-match attempts to try to gloss over what she had done only showed her in an even worse light.

By contrast, Belgium's Kim Clijsters is one of the nicest, and most sporting tennis players of recent years. It's great to see come back so successfully from retirement-and great to see her beat Williams in the semi-final.

Well stated. Serena is an embarassment to tennis, which is supposed to be a sport of ladies and gentlemen. As an American, I am ashamed that she represents us. She never gives opponents who beat her any credit for being good or playing well. I think she has actually given an example of her true self.

Serena has an enourmous talent but her lack of humbleness and sportsmanship makes her a pathetic human being. Very sad. And dont get me started on Venus, who looses on purpose everytime she plays her spoiled baby sister (i dont have proof of that but come on!).

Agreed. Serena Williams is obnoxious, arrogant and her conduct last night was a disgrace to the sport. She may be remembered for her hard hitting shots but I have yet to meet anyone who associates her with the greats like Billie Jean King, Chris Evert and Steffi Graf. And now watch...as the African-American community jumps up and down about how her 'slap on the wrist' is a 'racist' attack....

Yep. You were right then, and you are right now. Well said.

Hope all is well...

I use to admire her. She has not style. I am sure if any good comes from this, it will be children will see how ugly poor sportmanship can be.

You are a true embarassment to your father, mother and sister Venus. They will not tell you but deep down they are distraught by your unjusfiable terrible behaviour. You think you are better than the other but the reality is that the rest of the athletes are way beyond your understanding.

Your true color came out and it is definely black

Serena should be banned from the US Open for years to come. Her threating behavior towards umpires, her tantrums and unsportsmanlike conduct are a disgrace to all of tennis. How can anyone cheer for this immature, spoiled brat. I'm so glad she was beaten handily in thos years Open.
