Assad would be long gone by now if the US were really intent on toppling him. As it is, they're much happier making sure no side wins the Syrian civil war. That of course means helping the rebels (whoever they are) when it looks like Assad is gaining the upper hand, and withdrawing said help when things swing the other way, leaving all of America's regional enemies tied up in some way in the conflict.
