- I am a journalist, writer and broadcaster, based in the U.K. I am a regular contributor to The Guardian, The Week/First Post, Morning Star, Daily and Sunday Express, The Mail on Sunday, New Statesman, The Spectator, R.F.O. I am strongly opposed to the neo-conservative war agenda -and believe in the urgent necessity of a left-right anti-war coalition. On domestic issues I support re-nationalisation of the railways and public utilities (I am co-founder of The Campaign for Public Ownership), a new top rate of tax on the very wealthy, free care for the elderly, a free National Health Service including the restoration of NHS dentistry, and protection of the Green Belt and the countryside. How sad. I have often wondered why left intellectuals have this absurd habit of defending smoking just out of spite. What a pathetic form of "nonconformism", advocating something that you know is wrong just because some of those on the other side (those who advocate what you know is good and right and reasonable) are ugly and stupid. Now that Hitchens, that fascist at heart, has come out against the smoking ban, veteran left-wingers like you have an excellent justification for supporting it - because as you know, the smoking ban are the right thing to do, the only rational and humanistic policy imaginable. Wouldn't you admit it?
